Lent: what is it really all about?

If you ask people about Lent, they will normally say that it involves pancakes and Easter eggs. However, what is the real purpose of Lent?

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. In the middle ages, this marked the beginning of a period of fasting, where milk, eggs and fat were not eaten. As people did not want to waste these foods, then pancakes were made, hence Pancake or Shrove Tuesday.

Lent is a period of reflection, to think about what Jesus has done for us in His life, His suffering and ultimately dying on the cross. Jesus enables us to think of others rather than just ourselves.

Today, people will often give up something for Lent, instead of formally fasting. Is there something we can change with Godís help?  It is a time to consider other people, and whether I can do something for someone else. I can give a smile, offer a helping hand, or visit a friend in need. Is there something you can do that could help someone else?
